Jiggy: An Easy Web-Based IDE for iPhones

Now programming your iPhone is even easier thanks to Jiggy . Jiggy is a mini IDE that runs right on the iPhone, making it essentially OS agnostic. You do all the programming via a Web interface and you code in Javascript with a few Jiggy/iPhone native calls. The code is fairly straightforward ( here’s ‘Hello World’ ) and you can even add your own icons to the iPhone UI. This of course assumes you’ve already jailbroken your phone and can run Installer.app, but it’s a pretty cool proof-of-concept that will definitely grow into a good prototyping and mini-app programming system. 10.5: Install OS X to a different volume without rebooting

The file OSInstall.mpkg is the key to Leopard installs from a disk image. There is no need either to use the DVD again, or to reboot, to install Leopard to a different volume. After installing any Mac OS once from DVD, I always use Disk Utility to save the installer DVD as a disk image. Any further installs are from copies of this disk image; I put the original DVD away never to touch it again. I keep many external bootable drives, so the fire never goes out, so to speak. On OS X install disks, it has always been the case (and remains the case with Leopard) that the top-level Install Mac OS X icon wants to reboot, but buried in the disk is a file named OSInstall.mpkg that can install OS X to a different volume without rebooting. Reports that this is no longer possible with Leopard are in error. What has changed is that the folder structure is now hidden to the Finder. The ... Blogged with Flock

T-Mobile Turns Off Twitter?

Reports alleging T-Mobile has shut off Twitter for their customers are rolling in. Complaints have surfaced on T-Mobile’s user forum on Satisfaction as well as several other personal blogs and forums . A T-Mobile representative replied to a customer’s service request with this email: …Twitter is not an authorized third-party service provider, and therefore you are not able to utilize service from this provide any longer…. T-Mobile is not in violation of any agreement by not providing service to Twitter. T-Mobile regrets any inconvenience, however please note that if you remain under contract and choose to cancel service, you will be responsible for the $200 early termination fee that would be assessed to the account at cancellation. I’m a T-Mobile customer and testing the issue right now, although I have received sporadic updates as recently as last night. It would be quite astonishing if T-Mobile is blocking an opt-in text messaging service considering how common they are and T-Mobi...

Fluid Is Great For People Who Are More Comfortable With Desktop Apps

One of the driving forces of Web 2.0 has been the concept of bringing applications that were once the exclusive domain of the desktop to the web. There’s no shortage of examples; online email negates the need for a desktop client such as Outlook or Mac Mail, Google Docs, ThinkFree and Zoho are suppose to negate the need for Microsoft Office. And yet many, many people still prefer their old school desktop software. Fluid is a Mac OS X tool that helps bridge the gap between online and desktop applications. The idea behind Fluid isn’t new. We’ve covered gOS previously , a Linux distro that comes with a dock that is full of icons that open online apps. However with gOS those links simply open Firefox and brings the page up. Fluid on the other hand attempts to make the online application appear as though it is a desktop app by hiding the usual URL bar and buttons that would appear with a browser, instead offering a clean “Site Specific Browser” that shows the app requested. Setup is dead e...

Air Force developing UAVs that can recharge on power lines

Filed under: Transportation We've seen some interesting solutions to keeping UAVs powered for extended missions, but none so diabolical as actually landing on the enemy's power lines and using their juice to power up. That's the plan behind the Power Line Urban Sentry (PLUS) project currently being run by the Air Force Research Laboratory and private firm Defense Research Associates, and it's already yielded UAVs that can land on power lines and charge in three hours. The project started with attempts to charge by simply flying near power lines, but when that method yielded only micro-watts of juice, focus shifted to actually landing on the lines. The team is planning all sorts of other capabilities for the tech, including navigation systems -- "Power lines are like highways in the sky," says one of the researchers -- and auxiliary surveillance systems that power up when jacked in. On top of all that awesomeness, the team is also working with an outfit calle...

CradlePoint reveals PHS300 portable hotspot

Filed under: Cellphones Merely months after cranking out the CTR-350 , CradlePoint has upped the ante with the even more portable PHS300. This bugger enables a selection of handsets and USB cellular modems to create a "personal WiFi hotspot," and unlike its sibling, this one sports a built-in Li-ion to keep the connection alive (for a few hours, anyway) where there's no AC outlet in sight. Furthermore, you'll find WEP / WPA security features, an integrated firewall and the ability to charge up your phone via USB if necessary. Sound like just the thing you need? If so, you can drop your pre-order in now for $179.99 and patiently await the December 20th ship date. Accepted. 2300 char max (not incl. spaces) - 500 for figure = 1800 San Diego or bust. Temporal characteristics of cold pain perception. Mark S. Bolding, Jon Grossman, Luke Stoeckel and Michael A. Frölich The cold pressor task (CPT) is an experimental technique for inducing pain in humans (Wolf and Hardy, 1941). Recently, the cerebral representation of cold pain has been investigated using block design fMRI (Seifert and Maihofner, 2007; Davis et al., 1998). However, it is not clear whether cold pain perception follows the boxcar function assumed in a block design. Therefore, we studied how human volunteers rate the sensation of cold vs. tepid blocks over time. After obtaining informed consent, human volunteers had their right foot immersed alternately in ice water or tepid water. Participants used an electronic slide algometer to continuously rate the intensity of their cold perception. The rating was re...
